Green Curry meatballs in Thai Green Curry

While making kebab's one day, I wondered whether it might work to try a totally different flavor. A few days later, I was making Thai green curry and inspiration struck. I think this would work with (ground) pork or beef as well.

Ingredients
Green curry paste
Green curry meatballs
Frying
It's ready!
Serving

Materials:

2lb ground turkey
2 bell peppers
1 potato
1 can coconut milk
8 cloves garlic
8 Thai green chili peppers
2 shallots or 1 red onion, chopped
2 inch piece ginger (galangal if available)
1 cup fresh coriander leaves with stems
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp ground white (or black) pepper
5 tbsp fish sauce
2 tsp shrimp paste
2 tbsp lime juice
2 tsp brown sugar
1 tsp fresh basil
3-4 lime leaves - if available (fresh or frozen)

Preparation:

If using fresh lemongrass, prepare by stripping the dry and tough outer leaves and the bulb. Chop fine using a knife and combine in a food processor with garlic, green chillies, shallot (or onion), ginger, fresh coriander, ground cumin, white (or black) pepper, fish sauce, shrimp paste, lime juice, brown sugar and about 5tbsp coconut milk. Blend well till you get a fragrant paste. Divide into two parts.

Keep one part aside and combine the other with the ground turkey - mixing well with your hands.

Heat in a heavy bottom pan - covering about 1/2 cm at bottom. Shape the ground turkey mix into meatballs with your hands and shallow fry till lightly browned. Then place on paper towel to drain excess oil.

Heat 4 tbsp oil in a heavy bottom pan and add the second half of the curry paste. Stir for about 2 minutes on medium heat. Now add the remaining coconut milk. Simmer for about 10 minutes until fragrant - longer if you want a thicker curry. Add the basil, potatoes and bell peppers now and simmer for 10-15 minutes until the potatoes are done. Now add the meatballs and simmer for another 5-10 minutes until the meatballs soak in the goodness. Also add the optional lime leaves and fresh lemongrass at this stage.

Serving:

Serve with white rice - Basmati goes really well with this.

Alternatives:

- Try ground beef or chicken instead of turkey

- Use tofurkey instead of turkey if looking for a vegetarian option

- Use beef or chicken instead of meatballs - add these at the stage when you add the potatoes and cook till done
